About me

This is me! (1).pngHi! My name is Alex.

21 years ago I was born in Melbourne, Australia. Both my parents and siblings were born in England, and when I was 6 we moved to Orlando, Florida.

By quite a young age I had already decided I wanted to be a journalist due to my love of writing, and so I graduated high school and moved to England where I studied journalism at the University of Sheffield.

Needless to say, I hated it. I was stuck writing about things I didn’t care about in a way that required absolutely no creativity. In hindsight, picking a degree that requires speaking to strangers on a daily basis probably isn’t the best idea for someone with quite severe social anxiety. After one year, I  decided to quit university and for the first time, it felt like my life had no purpose.

Soon after I started working full-time in an Australian themed bar (things had come full circle) where I met some of the greatest people I’ve ever known, including my current boyfriend.

He is a South African born New Zealand citizen who had come to England to travel around Europe. We spent our rare days off travelling around the United Kingdom. Though, it had reached the point where we spent more waking time working than anything else.

Paris, France

So, for the sake of our sanity, after 7 months of working there, we quit our jobs and took off on a 3-week journey to the Netherlands, Belgium and France.

We returned to England with the plan of moving to York, working in another bar for six months to save up money to go on another trip. During the train ride there (on the day of our job interviews) we both knew we couldn’t return to monotonous lives just yet.

Rome, Italy

So we took what little money we had and travelled to 14 cities in nine European countries over the course of 6 weeks, spent two weeks in Florida and then moved to Rotorua, New Zealand.

Now that I’m back in the southern hemisphere, I’ve been reminded that my love for writing is still going strong, and so I’ve created this blog to share my nomadic experiences with the world.

I can’t wait for you to come with me on my adventures!

Mount Maunganui, New Zealand
